It’s awesome to know FUNImation is giving the same treatment to the movies as they are to the TV series. Now, I know a lot of people have been complaining and protesting the decision to make DBZ widescreen. But it’s not the end of the world. I mean, sometimes the crops don’t make that huge of a differance a majority of the time. Besides, it makes the whole viewing experience seem like a movie. Would I have prefered it if FUNImation released the series in fullscreen? Yeah absolutely, but the widescreen doesn’t bother me.

Now, the movies are great. If anyone else got the double-feature release, they would’ve noticed the inner packet has a two-star dragonball on it (the Trunks/Bardock feature has a one-star ball). The movie also features a preview for the next double-feature release, Tree of Might/Lord Slug, which will probably be released around the same time the Season Six box set comes out. If that’s the case, I think we can expect 7 steelbook releases from FUNImation. After Tree of Might/Lord Slug, it will probably go with the two Cooler movies naturally. Then I think they should release Super Android 13/Bojack Unbound together so that way the next release would be the Broly trilogy. This would leave the final installment as Fusion Reborn/Wrath of the Dragon. I’m really looking forward to this.

This dvd is almost required viewing for any dbz fan. Mostly, because if you don’t see the movie deadzone a lot of the first part of season4 of dragonball z won’t make a lot of sense. (They should probably package these two items together IMO.) I found this out the hard way. Who is garlic Jr? He fought Gohan? Surely not. After all in the first episode of the series Gohan acts like he can barely tie his shoes let alone beat somebody up. But you will find out the secret here. (spoiler warning) Gohan “forgot” the whole fight with Garlic Junior. Hmm, how convenient. It fits but in a cheesy way. “let’s have Gohan forget so we can cram a whole bunch of extra characters into the storyline and not mess things up” cha ching! Bring in the money! Seriously, if you are thinking of buying season 4 of dbz buy this as well and save yourself the confusion.

Probably the best thing for me about this set is the audio commentary for the first movie. I don’t know why they don’t do this more often. It is interesting to hear the people who voice the characters(the english ones) talk about the whole behind the scenes process.

Regarding the films themselves I probably liked deadzone the most but both were pretty good if a bit short. But why did Garlic Junior bother creating a dead zone in the first place? He is immortal, he doesn’t need to use gimmicks to win. Oh, yes that is also quite convenient.

I wasn’t expecting much from this movie due to its weird title and what I felt was an awkward animation style. Plus I was an avid Hayao Miyazaki fan, and I did not believe any anime movie could overcome the feel-goodness of his movies in general. I was very wrong.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Girl Who Leapt Through Time! Click Here

“The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” (or “Toki wa Kakeru Shoujo”) is about a girl named Makoto Konno who, after a strange encounter in a lab after school discovers she has the power to “jump” through time. Literally.

Although it started off slow, the pace made the hackneyed concept of time jumping much more original. Not to mention the main characters were all extremely likable and realistic. I couldn’t help but root for Makoto in whatever crazy things she wound up doing in the past. The things she went back to change were trivial things, like a test she failed, or when her friend Chiaki confessed to her. They are all things that ordinary, idiotic people like ourselves would do if we had that power. This story is only something the Japanese could come up with, and I commemorate director Mamoru Hosoda for blending mundane Japanese life with such a fantastical concept like time travel. It’s warm, funny, and touching. That is, for the first half.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Girl Who Leapt Through Time! Click Here

The second half of the film takes a hugely dramatic turn. It’s almost mind-blowing in the way things played out. For spoiler fans, it has something to do with Chiaki (You know, the friend who confessed to her?). Anyways, I loved this shift in the plot, even though it lost some of its precious feel-good elements along the way. Makoto still managed to keep some humor in her crazy ventures, and her personality is not lost in the plot twist. Chiaki’s transformation though, I’m still a bit iffy about.

I think this movie is way up there with Miyazaki’s films. The perfect blend of fantasy and feel-goodness, along with some dry humor as well makes for an excellent film. I also felt myself warming up to the animation style as well, which was very contemporary, so I wasn’t used to it, but I’m now completely in love with it. “Time waits for no one” so go watch this movie!

When I put The Girl Who Leapt Through Time into my DVD player, I expected a very good albeit light anime movie. What I got instead was an emotional experience which might be the most moving anime movie I’ve seen so far.

Makoto Konno is a slightly clumsy tomboy on the verge of the age right when teens start looking at the opposite sex differently whose priority is hanging out with her two best buddies – cheeky but endearing Chiaki Mamiya and evenheaded, gentlemanly Kosuke Tsuda. One day, her bicycle brakes won’t work, and she finds herself about to be killed by crashing into a train passing her lane. Fortunately, a miracle occurs – and she finds herself having time-jumped backwards safe and sound.

After talking to her aunt, who had a similar experience, she experiments and finds that she can do it again, begining with small things like preventing the poaching of a snack by her sister. But when things start progressing to slightly more serious matters and she takes a series of jumps in a panic when she realizes that one of her best guys is about to say something to her privately that will take them to a place from which they can’t come back that she isn’t sure she’s ready to go, things take a dark turn and spiral out of control – and she finds that this time, she might not be able to fix what she’s done…

Part sci-fi with a neat twist that anyone who isn’t familiar with the source material probably won’t see coming and part teen drama with an achingly accurate depiction of that critical time in life and personal development, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is a warm, poignant work that should be in the collection of any anime fan.

This National Geographic DVD tells more than just commenting on the recent movie. It sets the record straight. For example, the American volunteers called “The Eagles” that flew against the Luftwaffe in The Battle Of Britain were all civilian volunteers and not military men as portrayed in the Pearl Harbor film.Of these 214 men,109 died going into battle against the Germans. The bombing of Tokyo is also told and film of the planes taking off from the carriers is shown.Interesting to note that the actual two real pilots(not the film’s made-up ones)that flew against the Japanese attackers and shot down six of their planes were also not awarded the America’s highest military award. Some complain about African American steward Dorry Miller not receiving it but he wasn’t the only one.In fact, most of the Medal Of Honor awards at Pearl Harbor were posthumous. The documentary does make use of the film’s eccellent special effects and also uses real film and old war movie film as well.It points out at the end that some generic film was used to re-create the battle stories. There are interviews with survivors, navy men and women that were nurses there at the time. One nurse tells of bodies “stacked up like cordwood” at the back of the hospital. The Japanese pilots flew over the mainland at 7.40am and the first bomb was dropped at 7.50am.So the “Pearl Harbor” film’s portrayal of kids playing baseball and one woman hanging up the washing as they flew over at that early time looks a little shaky at that fact. But make no mistake, this National Geographic documentary isn’t just about that film.It is an eccellent documentary on the attack on Pearl Harbor. This documentary tells a good story and gives the true facts about what happened. The DVD also has some extras such as war documentary films from 1945 and 1963 as well as a National Geographic timeline detailing their history from the early 1900s onwards.

The main problem of this DVD was the overreliance on the movie for everything. The historical data was good and interesting but frequent use of movie cutscenes ruined any atmosphere. This DVD attempted to be both a behind-the-scenes featurette and a documentary and pretty much failed as both to be interesting and watchable.

The format of the DVD was a “Question and Answer” and short simplified answers were given (though some were good) that was in total 53 minutes long. The special features consisted of old news reel stories and propaganda (which had nothing to do with Pearl Harbor) with a short explanatory info blurb tacked on. $ for this seems totally unrealistic.

I personally recommend Tora! Tora! Tora! as being more consistant and enjoyable.

While various MST3K episodes have circulated over the internet and from companies like Rhino, the MST3K movie has long since disappeared from DVD shelves. Now, rather than rent a copy from Netflix and then “lose” it so you can keep one (or pay extravagant prices on Ebay), Universal has rereleased this great film to the delight of fans everywhere.

So what makes this different from any normal episode? Well, first of all it’s set between the sixth and seventh seasons (right after the departure of TV’s Frank and before Pearl joins as a regular), so Doctor F has the bad guy side all to himself. Fortunately, Trace is more than capable of making his every moment on screen a blast (there’s even a funny “mini-origin” monologue that starts the film off to catch everyone up to speed). The set is finally expanded here and we get to see more of the ship finally. But, strangely enough, this is actually SHORTER than any of the episodes you see on television. This was done because the studio was afraid people who weren’t familiar with the show would get bored in the theater–but of course, why would they go see it if they weren’t familiar with the show in the first place?

The movie they choose to riff is “This Island Earth”, which I always thought wasn’t such a bad film anyway. However, Mike and the Bots do manage to squeeze in some great lines throughout. Definitely worth the time!

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie! Click Here

One small warning: they do use a few more colorful words here than they did on television. Not often by any means, but they sneak a couple in here and there.

I’m so glad we’re finally seeing this gem return to DVD! Don’t know what brought it on, but thank you!

The popular TV show that revolves around a man and his two robots heckling horrible movies in space has found its way on film (very hard to find, but it’s there!). “Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie” gives you the rare opportunity of enjoying a bad movie as Mike and the robots are there to help you through it with their wisecracking and flawless delivery. It’s true that anyone can heckle a bad movie… but very few can do it as good as these guys can.

The mad and evil scientist, Dr. Clayton Forrester, has created an evil little scheme that is bound to give him world domination… but first thing’s first. He plans to torment Mike Nelson and the robots by sending them a real stinker of a film to watch called, “This Island Earth.” He is convinced that this movie will drive them insane. And since the guys cannot control when the movie begins or ends, they are forced to witness the true horror that is this awful movie that has a lobster creature dressed in slacks. Will this be the ultimate cheese that breaks the boys’ spirits? You’ll find out once you begin this hilarious movie.

The movie isn’t all that different from the regular show, which is a major plus. Sure, there is a little bit of a plot going on that concerns Dr. Forrester’s plan for global domination, but there’s always a side story like that going on in each of the episodes. The movie may look a little more professional than the show, but that’s the only difference. We still see the three silhouettes wisecrack and mock their way through the awful movie. Their delivery is always constant and right on target. In fact, you’re bound to catch something new that you didn’t catch the first time around when you watch it again. “This Island Earth” was a good choice for the movie, although they have been through much worse than this (see the episodes “Space Mutiny” or “Manos: Hands of Fate,” and you’ll see what I’m saying). The DVD has no extras whatsoever. Not only that, but it is EXTREMELY hard to find these days, so good luck trying to find it (it’s out there somewhere).

“Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie” doesn’t disappoint in any way. It’s always funny, always fresh and always clever. Fans of the show will most likely love the movie. It can even be enjoyed by those who are experiencing MST3K for the very first time. If you’re lucky enough to stumble upon this little gem, then I highly recommend checking it out. And remember kids, these guys are professionals; do NOT attempt this at home! -Michael Crane

This DVD contains all the anime’s episodes (which is only 4 of them). I had played the game on the GBA and had always wondered what the characters would sound like.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Tales of Phantasia! Click Here

When I finally watched the anime, boy was I in for a surprise. True that some of the characters like Cress, Chester and Mint I could imagine them sounding like they did, but others like Arche and Claus surprised me (but in a good way).

Just a fair warning, it doesn’t cover the whole game like one would think, and there seems to be a major gap between episode 1 and 2. But if you’ve played the game, you’ll understand what’s going on. If you’re a fan of the game, buy it.

When i first heard about the Tales of Phantasia OVA, I was pretty interested. But what I saw gave me a rather mixed reaction. The Animation and Music may be quite nice, but the compression of the story is where the problem with this anime lie. You see, this anime is based on an RPG game that was first released on the SNES, before getting remaked onto the PSX. So what clearly should have been at least 26 episodes in length, instead became 4. This resulted in major skipping around in the story, confussing those that have never played the video game it was based on.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Tales of Phantasia! Click Here

While I must admit I did enjoy what we did get to see, I am afraid that I can only recommend it for fans of the game. Everyone else will probably not enjoy it, thanks to all of the skipping in the story. But if that sort of thing does not bother you, then go right ahead. But I would prefer to use my money elsewhere.

All in all, I give this anime a 3/5 stars.

This 90 minute documentary was made for Catalonian Television by Antonio Farré in 2003 and has been shown in Europe, but not in the US, if I’m not mistaken. It is a detailed, loving, and well written and filmed musical biography of the great Spanish soprano. It is filled with clips from performances all over the world, starting with black & white film from Salle Pleyel in 1965 and up to 2002. There are many interviews with such luminaries as Marilyn Horne, Claudio Abbado, Zubin Mehta, José Carreras, Plácido Domingo, Renée Fleming, Joan Dorneman, Cheryl Studer, Samuel Ramey, Mstislav Rostropovich, Giuseppe di Stefano, Joan Sutherland, and more.

Caballé is interviewed extensively in a number of different settings and she tells us, touchingly, of her family’s commitment to her early training and of the largesse of a Barcelona family who funded her studies (and much more) when the family’s money ran out. She traces her career from her first professional job in Basle and Bremen, her début in her home theater, the Liceu in Barcelona to her triumphs in the greatest opera houses in the world. There are some thrilling musical clips. Particularly so are those of her and Marilyn Horne singing the duet from ‘Semiramide’ (breathtakingly beautiful) and a performance by Caballé at the Theâtre Antique in Orange of ‘Casta diva’ in what may be the most stunning performance of it I’ve ever heard.

There are scenes with her husband, tenor Bernabé Marti, and their two children, including one touching clip from a duet performance featuring her and her now-adult daughter, also named Montserrat and herself possessor of a lovely voice, singing together. Caballé comes across as a charming, gentle (but perfectionistic and stubborn about it), and generous artist. I was touched by the closing credit that says ‘This film would not have been possible without the support of my parents and the Bernard family,’ the latter being the family who supported her studies all those years ago at the Liceu school.

This DVD is well worth it if you admire this artist.

TT=98 minutes. PCM Stereo/Dolby Digital 5.1. Subtitles in English, French and Italian.

Scott Morrison

A fittingly sumptuous, all-encompassing look at Montserrat Caballe – her life and career, and especially her family. The archival footage of early Caballe performances is riveting, to be sure, and a thankfully sure intelligence in editing informs throughout. The tributes and comments of other artists reveal the awe and affection for Caballe held by her peers. Many affecting moments are spent with her family – brother Carlos, whose managerial genius assured her golden career, husband Bernabe erupting in song at Caballe’s birthday party, & her son and daughter reveal their mother and themselves, with insight. Caballe’s temperament shines, a complete musicianship utterly rare in a singer, and will and serenity to settle the question of the source of her magical musical gifts, and the success made of them. The enigma of her collaboration with F Mercury is spotlighted, bursts of laughter with her brother, her love of the Liceu Theatre – all contribute to a compelling journey with this artist. Caballe’s sensitive and compassionate remarks about Maria Callas are beautiful, and vital to the film. They reflect the passion of Montserrat Caballe: the great love she holds for her family, and for art. Docu-bios abound, this one’s something special. An exceptional film at a good price. The rewards are unmistakable.

How excited I was to finally find in the mail the Greatest American Hero collectors set. I opened the box with trembling fingers in hope and anticapation.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Greatest American Hero – The Complete Series! Click Here

The first thing I looked at once I dumped the contents on my bed was the T-shirt decal. Yikes. Barely 3 inches across. Ok. Let’s move on.

Next was a white box containing what I hoped was the instruction manual. Sure enough…there it was…..at last. Cool lights!! But wait!!! It only had a couple pages to it and I couldn’t read some of the text. Yet another disapointment. Plus only one page of a table of contents!!!! Now I truly new what Ralph was going through!!!! Well, time to move on to the next item in the box.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Greatest American Hero – The Complete Series! Click Here

The Cape!!!! Wow!!!! It’s a very nice piece of clothing! Strings tie together in a knot around my neck and it fell almost to my knees. Beautiful. “But does it work?” I ask myself. The instruction manual is hopeless, but might as well give this thing a try.

So I went outside of my two story house and got my ladder out. I climbed up to the roof and readied myself for a dream come true. Took several deep breaths. Closed my eyes……ummmmm….that’s not going to work very well…I decided to keep my eyes open. I took three long steps like the kid showed Ralph in the first episode of the film footage and leaped off the building into the air…I was flying!!!!!!….NOT. I fell the two stories into a big pile of leaves. The cape didn’t work!!!! The instruction manual might have had working instructions in it but it appeared to be broken, so no help there. I guess I’ll have to wait for the aliens to come along and give me one themselves. Oh, well….some day.

I now have plenty of time to review the DVD’s from the entire season as I sit and recover from my injuries from my plunge.

So, in conclusion I have to say that this collectors pack is great to add to your collection, but the contents don’t work as well as Ralphs suit did.

The DVD Film footage of Ralph is incredible!!!

Great value, Great nostalgia, Great fun.

Buy it. But don’t try it.

Well, it’s been a long time coming, but Ralph and the red jammies have finally gotten the deluxe treatment! Every episode from its three-season run have made it into this little black box, complete with a replica of the instruction book for the suit’s powers, a full-length cape, and the pilot episode for the Greatest American Heroine!

This show had a great little message – It’s important to keep trying, even if we don’t always know what we’re doing.

And what better way to illustrate this than a high-school teacher who gets a suit with special powers from a group of intergalactic green guys? Nothing else even comes close!

Now I will admit, I wasn’t expecting a lot from the instruction manual – much like on the tv show, there are no actual instructions. We get a page with “Instructions” on it, and on the next page there is a hologram cover that flips from English to the “alien language”. The last part of the instruction book has the 6 paneled lights on it, and the book lights up with a flip of a switch on the back that illuminates the inner page, the tabs and the spine, which is pretty nifty. The packagers even put the batteries in the book for us – mighty nice of them! I would have preferred a replica of the instruction book from the second season, but that would skyrocket the price of this box set another $50.00 at least.

The cape is really for cosmetic admiring because the material is very thin…but it’s a nice little extra.

As for the iron-on transfer, it’s the exact same size as the emblem on the black box, roughly the size of your palm…not a big emblem which we were all hoping for.

One other feature that hasn’t been mentioned is the marking ribbon inside the box. While it’s not a huge extra, it can keep your place while watching each disc set – for the unorganized or forgetful watchers, this will help to keep track of which episode you’re on.

The individual sleeves for the discs are slender, much like the box sets for Charlie’s Angels or 7th Heaven – so if you were to break up the box and put these sleeves on a shelf, it’s a space saver’s dream.

Now on to the episodes themselves. Let’s face the facts, like most of the tv shows of the 1980’s, there is a lot of stock and reused footage from earlier shows that get spliced into other episodes – one of them had Ralph’s schoolkids playing a concert clearly spliced over with footage from Woodstock. But does that stop me from watching these episodes over and over again? Absolutely not, it adds to the nostalgia!

However, there are a few glaring issues in a few episodes that haven’t been brought up yet:

(1) Not all of the music from the original episodes was brought over into the DVD transfer. For example, during the episode “Operation Spoilsport”, Ralph was sitting in a car and the aliens make a “special dedication” to Ralph over the radio – the song was “Eve of Destruction”.

At the end of the episode, the aliens send another special song, “It’s a Beautiful Morning”. However, in the DVD treatment of this episode, other songs are used instead.

Also, in the episode “The Shock Will Kill You”, when Ralph was magnetized and setting off Bill’s car horn, he originally honked out the tune “Shave and a Haircut” – but the sound was removed altogether and it ruined the humor of that scene.

(2) The use of the name “Hinkley” from the first season was not put back into the first season episodes. It’s common knowledge that this show debuted a mere 12 days before the assassination attempt on Former President Ronald Reagan, and as a result, Ralph’s last name was either dubbed out, dubbed over, or changed completely (In one episode they call him Mr. Hanley). I would have expected these to be put back in, but probably for posterity’s sake they were left as is.

Now for the last episode on the first season of the boxed set:

The Greatest American Heroine.

It was a cute idea, to have the powers of the suit transferred to a female character. Keep in mind, this was more of a reunion episode/pilot pitch for a new series; set 3 years after the last episode aired in 1983.

Out of every episode in the series, this is the hardest episode to watch because it is simply not entertaining. I’m positive that upon seeing this episode, no network wanted to pick up “The Greatest American Heroine”, and the pilot never saw the light of day until now.

So what’s the final verdict?

For any fan of the 1980’s, this box set is worth the price…even with the shortcomings that have been mentioned.

Now a whole new generation of kids and adults can watch the antics of Bill Maxwell trying to keep Ralph from ruining yet another government issued vehicle with their trial-and-error experiments using the red jammies!

ENJOY!

Smart People is a great dramedy–a mixture of comedy and drama. It goes for the Smart Laugh, not the Big Laugh. Mark Poirier, the son of a MIT professor, wrote a Smart script, and Smart Director Noam Murro very smartly cast some of the smartest actors around: Ellen Page, Thomas Haden Church, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Dennis Quaid. I loved it, because I am also very Smart, but it didn’t do as well at the box office or with the critics (except it was the Number One DVD at Netflix for a while) as it deserved. That Smarts.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Smart People! Click Here

I think the problem with this movie is that like the characters, Lawrence Wetherhold (Dennis Quaid) and his daughter Vanessa Wetherhold (Ellen Page), it doesn’t suffer fools gladly. Thus, for a large portion of the audience, it is over their heads, and they feel like it is condescending, supercilious, and they feel patronized. As Lawrence’s adopted brother, Chuck Wetherhold (Thomas Haden Church) says of Vanessa: “You’re a monster!”

And that is an understatement. In another scene she says to her father, “Theresa Sternbridge practically runs a soup kitchen and she’s always seen posing in photos with crack babies and dying, old, crusty ladies. And do you know why? She scored in the 45th percentile on her SAT. People like you and me don’t need to compensate.”

Buy,Download, Or Stream Smart People! Click Here

Although Chuck sees that Vanessa, and her role model father, are both monsters, in spite or because of their intelligence, he still loves them and tries to help. Did I mention that Chuck is a screw up, down on his luck, and an opportunist who sees a win/win situation for himself when his brother has a seizure and cannot drive. He will have a place to stay, and 3 squares, for driving his brother around–albeit very unreliably.

Though he is not the greatest driver, he really has a lot of intelligence about people. For instance, at a Christmas Dinner, where Vanessa’s brother James Wetherhold (Ashton Holmes) complains about the rubbery ham (Vanessa used a recipe downloaded from the Internet written in the archaic French of Louis the XIV, and translated by her, maybe not as well as she thinks (a great example of her over achiever approach to cooking); when former student and now doctor Janet Hartigan (Sarah Jessica Parker) drops in unexpectedly Chuck explains “These children haven’t been properly parented in many years. They’re practically feral. That’s why I was brought in. To keep them from killing each other.”

All of the characters have a story arc, where they have an epiphany, and reach a greater awareness; but the Father/Daughter dynamic between the professor and his precocious progeny is perhaps the most complicated. He takes her for granted and is even less involved with his son James, while she idolizes him and emulates his self absorbed and condescending approach to other, less worthy, people.

———————

Lawrence Wetherhold: I don’t think you’re very happy Vanessa.

Vanessa Wetherhold: Well, you’re not happy. And you’re my role model.

=============================

She tries to sabotage his relationship with Janet, but he is more than capable of sabotaging it all by himself. However, with a little help and coaching from brother Chuck, perhaps he will prevail after all.

By the way, fabulous performance by Thomas Haden Church, comparable to his character and performance in Sideways. Chuck was one of my favorite characters.

That Ellen Page really nailed her role goes without saying. Her only danger now is being forever typecast as the wise-beyond-her-years waif. What other young actress could convincingly play someone stressed out about getting a perfect SAT score?

Sarah Jessica Parker was smart and sassy, yet she was also a bit damaged, and had a lesson to learn. Great scene when Janet first meets Chuck.

Dennis Quaid wore a fat suit and had a shuffling walk, like he had something stuffed up inside him. He looked very different than previous roles, and created a quite convincing persona. He really conveyed his utter disregard for those below him on the bell curve of intelligence. He was very annoying, as his role called for that, but gradually, perhaps, he would come around. One sub plot was about him getting a book published, and as you could imagine by the dry academic title, there was little chance of that happening. But when he submitted it under a title suggested by his daughter Vanessa, YOU CAN’T READ!, it finally was accepted.

Bloomberg: I got to the third section where I noticed a certain marketable tone, the surly smarter-than-thou @$$#0[3 tone.

===================================

Their strategy was that it would be attacked on NPR and three weeks later he’d be interviewed defending it on Charlie Rose. Kind of like when you have a lemon, make lemonade.

Last but not least, Ashton Holmes as James Wetherhold and Camille Mana as Missy Chin, one of Lawrence’s students, were both good in their small but pivotal roles. James had good reason to stay away from the toxic environment he called home as much as possible, but when he was there, he made a quiet impact.

This was the first big screen role for Camille Mana, but I recognized her from the UPN sitcom One on One where she played Lisa Sanchez. She is very smart, having graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in economics after only 6 semesters, and I predict great things for her.

In Smart People she keeps popping up as the thorn in her professor’s side, and if he wasn’t so self absorbed, perhaps he would remember her name. She and James even hook up, and you almost wish the focus had been on them a bit more. However, they function as a reminder that other people have lives just as interesting if not more so than the self absorbed professor and his equally self absorbed daughter. When James gets a poem published in The New Yorker, Lawrence is surprised to learn that he writes poetry. Perhaps he should listen to what other people have to say once in a while.

I really liked this film because I could relate to the Smart People, and how hard it is for them to be humble. Yes, I too have a reputation for not suffering fools gladly, but after years of isolation, I would suffer them more than gladly. Though I may have an extremely high IQ, there are many different kinds of intelligence, and I wish that I had a little more intelligence about people. Perhaps I can get a high score on an intelligence test, but sometimes I can be a complete idiot.

Vanessa Wetherhold: You should really make your bed. It sets the tone for the day.

Chuck Wetherhold: But, how do you know what tone I was trying to set?

=========================================

Dr. Lawrence Wetherhold’s (Quaid) got an impulse problem. When his car’s impounded at Carnegie Mellon, where he teaches Lit, he climbs over the fence to get his briefcase. The resulting brouhaha gets his license suspended for the next six months. He does meet Dr. Janet Hartigan (Parker) whose life was changed by taking Wetherhold’s class many years ago–major shifted from English to Medicine.

Enter Chuck (Haden-Church) his adopted brother. Being between very odd jobs, Chuck is the only family member with time to squire Lawrence around.

Lawrence’s daughter Vanessa (Page) is studying like mad to get into Stanford with a perfect SAT. Between cramming sessions, she hides romance books from her Dad, who’d probably die of horror if he knew she read them.

James (Holmes) the elder son is already in school and unbeknownst to his Dad, is a poet. His poem got accepted by “The New Yorker” before Lawrence even found out.

Lawrence is interested in the doc, but he can’t quite get over the loss a couple of years past, of his wife. Her clothes still fill his closet and clearly her memory still haunts him. Chuck and Vanessa try to work on cleaning up Lawrence’s life while nearly messing up their own.

Slowly, the characters in the film begin to deal with their own griefs, mistakes, and begin to come to grips with themselves and each other. They’re not the most likable or the best fit, but what family is? They’re definitely interesting–and you do see character development in the major players.

I’ve seen my share of documentaries, and I’ve seen a few that have dealt with disability. “Murderball” easily eclipses them all.

Too often people with disabilites get thrust into the role of flawless inspirations, this principle has held true across both fictional and non-fictional films alike. It was because of this trend that I approached “Murderball” with cautious optimism.

It was very surprising indeed when “Murderball” was in fact a genuinely uplifting and inspiring film,a film that dared to really show its subjects complete with flaws. Two other disability-related documentaries I’ve seen are “Rolling” and “King Gimp” Both are probably extremely inspiring to an able-bodied audience, but speaking as someone who is in a wheelchair, some of the moments in those films were downright horrifying and depressing. For example in “Rolling”, a woman falls out of bed while dressing herself and videotapes her barely censored nude rescue by an able-bodied friend and her husband. Able-bodied audences would say, “what grit and determination” I sat there and prayed that would never happen to me. “King Gimp” profiles a supremely talented artist and parts of his story are inspiring especially to someone like myself who wants to have a career in the arts. Yet, it too depressed me because much of the film concerns the subject’s unrequited love for a female caregiver. He laments that he will never find anyone.

“Murderball” on the other hand avoids those pitfalls and showcases some of the nastiest, (…)ever to hit the screen and even though I most certainly do not fit into that category and wouldn’t be caught dead playing the titular sport I enjoyed every minute of it. All of the people in this film have a level of independence that for the moment I can only dream of, and they are much more impaired than I am in certain respects. So seeing them doing something they love, and quite a few of them FINDING love is absolutely, unadulteratedly inspiring. It is the first documentary I’ve seen that left me happy through the end credits.

“Murderball” is ostensibly about quadriplegic wheelchair rugby and there are some truly thrilling scenes of play between archrivals the USA and Canada…to be sure.

But what “Murderball” is really about is the undeniable, unstoppable, fire-in-the-belly will to live and more specifically the drive to overcome adversity: both of spirit and of body.

Athletes Mark Zupan, Joe Soares, etc. all exhibit, really inhabit such a positive, go-for-broke take on life and living that you cannot help but be embarrassed when you start to think of your piddly problems.

One of the things a Documentary should do is enlighten and inform and “Murderball” has those two topics covered—no problem. But “Murderball” also gives you Hope and that is a quality to which most other films can only aspire.
